Three days in London with kids: parks, play and time to pause

A good family day in London does not need five attractions. Pick one main outing, leave space for lunch and keep the afternoon flexible. This three-day plan works as a starting point for families with toddlers or school-age children. Swap the days around for weather, bookings and your children’s energy.

Day 1: start with a playground

Make the first morning an outdoor one. Marylebone Green, in the southern part of Regent’s Park, has play areas for children up to twelve, plus children’s toilets and a baby-change facility. Check the Royal Parks playground information for current hours.

For toddlers, keep this to a short play session and lunch, then leave room for a nap or quiet afternoon. With school-age children, allow longer for climbing and exploring, without adding another ticketed attraction simply to fill the day.

If you are staying around Maida Vale or Kilburn, a local park may make a gentler start. Look at Paddington Recreation Ground and Westminster’s play spaces, or Queen’s Park. These are alternatives, not a three-park route. Check current gate times and the walk from your actual apartment.

Rain plan: bring the Science Museum day forward if tickets are available. Otherwise, use the Young V&A option below and move the playground to a dry day.

Day 2: choose your Science Museum adventure

Book the museum’s free general admission before travelling. For younger children, The Garden is designed for ages 3–6 and also welcomes younger visitors. The gallery is free; check current hours before travelling. Bring a change of clothes if water play is likely to be popular. The Garden visitor information.

For school-age children, consider Wonderlab, recommended for ages 7–14. It has a separate paid ticket; check the current gallery hours when booking. Check the available session and price directly rather than assuming museum admission includes it. Wonderlab tickets and details.

Aim for one gallery or booked experience, then lunch. A toddler family might head back afterwards; older children can choose one additional gallery if they still have energy. A second major museum is optional, not an obligation.

For transport, the museum lists South Kensington as its nearest Tube station. Its access guidance identifies Knightsbridge and Earl’s Court as step-free alternatives with longer onward journeys. Check the museum’s directions and your whole route before choosing a station; the closest station is not necessarily the easiest with a pushchair.

Day 3: an indoor day at Young V&A

Young V&A in Bethnal Green offers Play, Imagine and Design galleries. General admission is free and does not require booking; special exhibitions or events may have separate arrangements. Check current opening hours before travelling. Plan your Young V&A visit.

For toddlers, choose a short visit with plenty of time for a break. School-age children can spend longer following the activities that interest them. Leave the rest of the afternoon open rather than racing across London for another attraction.

The museum lists buggy parking, baby changing and lifts. Bethnal Green is the closest Underground stop, but Whitechapel is its stated nearest step-free station, with a longer walk. Compare both approaches for your family. Young V&A is in Bethnal Green: it is a separate destination from the V&A in South Kensington.

Make the journeys part of the plan

Use the exact apartment address and attraction entrance when planning travel. Check current services and access using TfL’s journey planner. Allow time for food, toilets, walking and changes rather than relying only on the train time.

London buses use low-floor vehicles, but space for an unfolded buggy is not guaranteed. Wheelchair users have priority in the dedicated space, and a buggy may need folding. TfL’s bus guidance.

For a New Malden stay, you may prefer a south-west London day instead of travelling east. Hampton Court’s Magic Garden is included with palace admission; check seasonal opening and any capacity restrictions. It is a separate outing, not a quick extra stop after the museums. Questions about planning your days out

What can we do in London with children when it rains?

Choose an indoor attraction around your children’s interests. Young V&A offers Play, Imagine and Design galleries, with free general admission and no booking required. For children interested in science, consider the Science Museum; Wonderlab has a separate paid ticket and is designed for ages seven to fourteen. Check current admission arrangements and your journey before setting off.

For a dedicated wet-weather plan, compare our rainy-day indoor outings by age and area.

Do we need to book every attraction in advance?

No—booking requirements differ. Young V&A’s general galleries do not require booking, while the Science Museum asks visitors to book free admission and Wonderlab has its own ticket. Check the official page for the exact attraction or exhibition, including paid extras, before making your plan.

How many attractions should we plan each day with toddlers?

One main outing is a useful starting point, with time for meals, naps and getting there. Choose a playground or a short museum visit, then leave the afternoon flexible. Older children may enjoy longer at one attraction or an optional second stop. This is suggested pacing, rather than a fixed schedule for every family.

Choose the apartment around your routine

Count bedrooms, actual beds and dining seats. Check stairs and laundry access before booking. Travel cots and high chairs must be pre-ordered, with availability and charges confirmed for your stay. A sofa bed can change how the living room works after bedtime, and a garden does not by itself establish enclosed or childproof outdoor space.

Use the family apartment checklist and family-and-group cost guide to compare options. For a Maida Vale base, read the Staylio three-bedroom home in Maida Vale: layout and practical details before enquiring.
